Skywatch Friday – Aug 27, 2010

Something yummy this way comes!

Something yummy — at least as far as these birds were concerned — must have recently hatched in the acreage across the road from our apartment.  The pasture was full of hundreds of these birds, all happily lunching on something that caught their eye.  The dark bank of rain clouds didn’t seem to dampen their feasting.

Happy Friday to all — more Skywatchers can be found here.

  1. I love this shot, all framed in by the pines! However, with my very limited bird knowledge, I can tell you that those are starlings, not grackles, Nancy. Grackles are the big black birds that come in the spring (they may be gone now?) Starlings are the goutweed of the bird world. Happily, we had a small flock around here but the redwings and crows put the run to them in the spring and they haven’t been back.

Thanks for the ID, jodi — I thought they were too dark feathered for starlings, but couldn’t really see them up close anyway. :) The goutweed of the bird world…I like that!
