(Un)Happy Groundhog Day!

Alas! must it ever be so?
Do we stand in our own light, wherever we go,
And fight our own shadows forever?
– Edward Robert Bulwer Lytton

Under clear, sunny skies and a bone-numbing -16°C, Shubenacadie Sam, the first revelatory rodent to make his prediction in Canada, slowly emerged from his cozy hut and was scared back inside by his shadow.  I guess that means we’re in for another six weeks of winter, and no one would be surprised by that on this cold and windy morning.  As always, we take what Mother Nature dishes out, I guess.

I’d like to point out to my visitors that — inspired by bloomingwriter’s (jodi) post — I’m going to feature a link in my sidebar to a blog that I enjoy very much and that I feel deserves more exposure.  I’ll showcase a different blog every week; some are brand new to me and some are blogs I’ve visited for some time that I believe you would also enjoy.  Click on the photo under the “Have You Visited This Blog?” header to pay them a visit and say hello!

  1. Hi Nancy, I did not realize that this weather prognosticator existed, thanks for the education. So sorry about those temps and the sun that cast the offending shadow. It is raining here, still snow on the ground however, so no shadow for our rodent. Thank goodness. Will check out your chosen blog too. :-)

  2. Hi Nancy,
Our groundhog didn’t see his shadow, but I think we will still have lots of winter.
What a great idea to feature another blog to enjoy. I’ll check it out.

  3. Good morning Nancy. What a good idea to introduce new blogs. That will help others meet and get to know new folks.

That is a great photo of Sam. Our local groundhog, Kliffton, won’t be seeing his shadow today but it really doesn’t matter. In this area we will have at least 8 more weeks of winter.

  4. It makes no difference to us because we always get spring storms, no matter what this chubby creature does. It is fun to see everyone get worked up in a lather over this though. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I like that idea of featuring a blog…I may have to try this later.

  5. Poor Puxatawny (whatever)(wherever) Phil NEVER sees his shadow, does he? Does he? Poor guy. It’s not his fault. Forced into an untenable marketing ploy by the politicians and weathermen he can’t win for losing. (and weatherwomen, of course) I’m all about making my own Spring instead. Buy some cut flowers and place them in vases, put spring flowers as my Desktop photo, and visit nurseries and garden centers. I’m SO READY!

  6. Hey Nancy, good to hear from you! Your blog is looking good.
I have to laugh at the ground hog. It would be nice If we ONLY had six more weeks of winter, wouldn’t it?

We are getting more light every day, though. I am already ordering seeds and have even planted some lavender for the garden.

  7. Hey Nancy, our groundhog isn’t worried about seeing his shadow, he was looking to see snow. And he didn’t. Whoops, problems of Olympic proportions. They are busy trucking in snow right now. Way to go groundhogs.

What a great idea of having that feature on your sidebar. Jodi’s idea is really “snowballing” LOL.

  8. Lovely, Nancy, I knew with your huge heart you’d run with this. Awesome. Just awesome. Thank you for spreading the seeds and encouraging others–like you’ve done for as long as I’ve been reading your posts. You’re wonderful. :-)

  9. He is so cute, though, it’s hard to be mad at him… especially for me, since our local groundhog did *not* see his shadow. Rather changes your perspective on the observance, I think. Hoping yours was wrong maybe and you’ll get an early thaw.

Your kitty is adorable, and your grandson should be a model. (May that knowledge stand you in good stead against the winter blues!)

  10. Nice idea featuring a different blog a week Nancy (and Jodi!). I hope your groundhog is wrong ~ I feel like it’s been such a long winter already.
