Mistress of the Night

The full-orbed moon with unchanged ray
Mounts up the eastern sky,
Not doomed to these short nights for aye,
But shining steadily.
She does not wane, but my fortune,
Which her rays do not bless,
My wayward path declineth soon,
But she shines not the less.
And if she faintly glimmers here,
And paled is her light,
Yet alway in her proper sphere
She’s mistress of the night.

  1. Nancy,

Loved the poem! I’m a big fan of Thoreau. Many years ago we took a canoe trip just like the one he wrote about in the Northern Woods book. Awesome adventure too. No Indian guides though…

  2. What a fabulous photo, Nancy! Truly heartstopping! When I see a full moon, I always think of Judy Collins singing “The Moon’s a Harsh Mistress.” Such a haunting song…

  3. I like the black background and it is easier to read. I have to make extra large print cause of my macular degeneration which really slows my reading down but I have a feature on my Mac that lets me enlarge it quite easily so don’t worry that I won’t be able to read—cause I’m going to…I have to see what you are thinking today.

I can never get a shot of the moon so I’m applauding that you’ve got such a good looking one.

I read that you have one daughter coming and one going. I know that’s a mixed set of emotions so my heart is with you. I just don’t like my one son being so far away. I felt glad she( daughter that likes to hike and such) got a job in her field but sad for you.

And I loved your post below about those plants that try to hang on feeling that somehow they are short lived. You sure make me think a lot when I come and visit. I like that very much.

  4. Nancy that is one gorgeous shot of the moon (how did you do that !!)
The header pictures is stunning too .. we are very slow at a colour change here .. we need colder nights and some mild sunny days but I think that is NOT going to happen .. instead we have rain and wind whipping the trees .. darn it all !
    Stunning pictures girl : )

  5. Thoreau, the ultimate walking man, wrote great poems. And this is a great one, thanks for sharing this and the superb photo of the moon. Everyone is asking how you did it. HOW did you DO this? It is wonderful.

  6. I am so glad you captured the Harvest Moon! She is mistress of the night! We’ve had clouds for days and missed it! Thank you for sharing! gail

  7. Thanks so much everyone for all your lovely comments. I’ve been away from the computer for a couple of days, seeing my daughter off on her trip west. :( So, it’s always wonderful to come here and find such complimentary comments.

As for the moon shot, it was taken with my regular camera (a Fuji s6000), which has a 28 – 300mm zoom lens, plus I used a 2x optical zoom feature to bring the moon in even closer. I just used an auto setting for the exposure and the balcony rail to steady the camera and hoped for the best. It was too cold a night to set up tripod somewhere away from town lights, and I honestly didn’t think I’d get much of a shot at all, but sometimes, we’re given nice surprises. :)

I appreciate and welcome your comments!
