When Life Hands You Lemons…

photo © georgiesharp/Flickr…make lemonade!  ‘Tis the perfect time of year for a pitcher of that sweet-sour drink that’s sure to quench your thirst and load up your Vitamin C.  I found what appears to be a perfect recipe for this delectable summer sipper on a mailing I received today from The Farmer’s Almanac.  I haven’t tried it yet, but it gets wonderful reviews.  (This is cut and pasted from the Almanac link.)

“Here is a treasured old-fashioned memory — fresh, crisp, cold, and delicious lemonade. On a hot afternoon our guests especially enjoy it while sitting under a shady tree. An ounce of gin or vodka may be added.” – The Governor’s Inn, Ludlow, Vermont

  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon grated lemon rind
  • 1-1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 5 cups cold water
  • Lemon and lime slices for garnish
  • Fresh mint sprigs

Combine sugar and boiling water, stirring until sugar dissolves. Add lemon rind, lemon juice, and cold water; mix well. Chill. Serve over crushed ice garnished with lemon and lime slices and fresh mint sprigs.
