Anywhere Other Than Here

If I were anywhere other than here today,

I might embrace the drips and drops

Of rain, that cling to petals and bright green leaves

Before it stops.

If I were anywhere other than here today,

I might grab jacket and muddy boots

And walk to the beach where love of Nature

First spread roots.

Rain...If I were anywhere other than here today,

I might smile as I bent to a rain-drenched bloom–

Inhaled sweetness all that’s needed to

Dispel gloom.

If I were anywhere other than here today,

I might pack a picnic and, sitting cross-legged on sodden grass,

Nibble on grapes and crackers and cheese until

The storm had passed.

If I were anywhere other than here today,

I might not mind another summer rain

But Here am I, not Any Where, but Here.

  1. Nancy,

What a absolutely beautiful poem, and those photos perfectly portraying the feelings you are expressing.

    Oh my.

Thanks, Jen! And thanks for taking the time to comment.

  2. What a beautiful poem- goes well with Portland!

Thanks, Tessa — it seems the entire east coast (including Maine, I’m sure) is well saturated. :) Thanks for your visit and for taking the time to comment.

  3. I feel as drenched as you do Nancy. It’s been a soggy year for us as well. Maybe we’ll see lots of sunshine this fall to make up for it?? We can hope, right? Your photos are beautiful.

Thanks so much, Kathleen — “They” say that August will be warm/hot and dry, and that our fall will follow suit. While I don’t exactly care for all the grey/dull weather, neither do I like the heat, so I guess we should be careful what we wish for. :)

  4. Dear Nancy, That is a wonderful poem~~and the photos are perfect. It feels exactly like that today…the rain keeps coming. gail

It seems there is no end to it, Gail — one thing about it, the countryside is positively LUSH this summer. That which hasn’t mildewed, of course. :-) Showers today, and rain all weekend is the forecast from here. Sigh.

  5. Nancy, a lovely poem and expresses how many of us feel at the moment! This is now our third summer in a row that has been wet and grey, I don’t like heat but…

    Best wishes Sylvia (England)

Hi Sylvia — no, I don’t like the heat either. It seems it’s feast or famine here. And MORE rain on the way for the entire weekend. Yippeeee! ;)

  6. Sounds like you have been getting a lot of rain lately. I wish you could send a little down our way. Great poem.

    Always Growing

  7. Ah, Nancy. I wish you could be here and I could be there! The grass is always greener, isn’t it?! 103 and absolutely no rain in sight. But I think the rain truly inspired you to create a beautiful poem. Thanks for sharing.

I appreciate and welcome your comments!
