Boom De Ah Dah!!

earthTomorrow is Earth Day. Go outside, no matter what the weather! Take in the:

“…tonic of outdoor air, the healthy influence that comes from contact with the soil, the delightful companionship with nature.” (Eben E. Rexford, The Home Garden, 1909).

Straight from the pages of The Farmer’s Almanac, here are some suggestions, with links, of ways you could celebrate this amazing planet we live on!

• Plant wildflower seeds. See our article, Wild About Wildflowers.

• Start landscaping using native plants. See our article, The Natural Garden.

• Bring nature into the garden with plants that attract butterflies.

• Grow your own vegetables. See tips on starting an organic garden as well as what to grow in a beginner’s vegetable garden.

• Did you know that the average person spends over 90 percent of his time indoors? Take a walk, go to a park, pick up litter, visit a farmers’ market, or just breathe in fresh air!

Unplug. It’s estimated that 75 percent of electricity used to power our TVs, computers, and other electronics is consumed while the power is turned off. Unplug your electronics.

Then take ONE MINUTE to watch this Discovery Channel promo and see if you don’t agree — THE WORLD IS JUST AWESOME!

  1. YAY for EARTH DAY!!!! I shall endeavor to get out into my yard, into the wilds, do something to honor this special day! Thanks, Nancy!

  2. Great suggestions Nancy. I’m planning to turn my TV off (something my daughter hates), plant a veggie garden (maybe not on earth day exactly but this season) and seeds (that I will do tomorrow).

  3. The world IS just awesome! I’m going to take a long, long walk tomorrow with my camera to see what I can see. Yay, Earth! Happy Earth Day!

  4. Nancy, Guess what happens when a teacher is no longer actively teaching? She completely forgets about Earth Day! Thanks so much for the reminder. We always concentrated so much on both Earth Day and Arbor Day each Spring. :-) Half of the time, I have a hard time believing how fast time flys… and that we’re passing through the month of April so quickly!
