Gail at Clay and Limestone wrote a wonderful essay yesterday on how she named her blog — when you see the lovely gardens she’s built in the most tenuous and stubborn soil conditions, you’ll be suitably impressed. She asked, at the end of her explanation, how other bloggers named their blogs, so I’m joining in.
Who wants to read that drivel, I asked myself on more than one occasion. Who cares? It’s as if I’m talking to myself. And bingo, Soliloquy was born.
My first header on Blogger featured a hideous combination of lime green and blue, and a coffee cup. It seemed approprite at the time, though the header graphic changed a gazillion times through the years.A soliloquy, by definition, is:
1 : the act of talking to oneself
2 : a dramatic monologue that represents a series of unspoken reflections
In drama, a soliloquy is a device which allows a character to speak directly to the audience.
A series of unspoken reflections — it suited my reasons for blogging perfectly. It didn’t matter whether anyone read my posts or not, it was a place where I could bare my soul and share my thoughts, almost anonymously.
I’ve become a bit braver since those first, feeble posts, sharing my love of nature and gardening, even sharing a bit of my poetry and photography, two of the many things about which I am passionate.
So Gail, that’s how Soliloquy came to be…Soliloquy! Anyone else care to join in?

You’ve written a wonderful post! I can’t imagine ever thinking your writing was, how did you put it, drivel! Never have I experienced drivel. Your photos, your posts and your quotes have always seemed to me to be deeply personal and often ask this reader to consider what she has read!

Nancy, Being a Shakespeare fan, I always loved your title. Now I can appreciate it even more knowing how and why you chose it for your blog.
I’ve never heard the “potato post” term before, but that’s so funny–I feel as though that’s what I write sometimes. But I have never read a “potato post” on your blog! Your photography, as I’ve often said, is stunning. But I love the combination of poetry and quotes with the photos. They’re thought-provoking and often calming at the end of the day.

So that’s Soliloquy…I do enjoy your reflections…hmmm there’s a blog title. My own title of course does not take much thought or explanation ;-)…but what to do if we move.

That is a very cool name and an interesting story. I posted how my name came to be on Gail’s blog, but essentially, I just didn’t have any other creative ideas , lol.

It is interesting how blog names come about. I think your suits you to a tea. You are a wonderful writer and so many people enjoy to read what you have to say in your own wonderful, thoughtful words.

I think my original blog name would take a lot more explaination than the current name. I like to chat about whatever strikes my fancy. Maybe I’ll talk about The Warden is IN sometime, but I think Anna’s the only reader I had in those days.

quite often a blog name will draw me in, it is – obviously – a teaser. your blog, Nancy, is one of those blogs that i came to because of the name. Soliloquy remains one of my favourite names! it is apt, playful and very creative.
in general it is one of the things i love about the world of blogs – seeing how creative people can be when it comes to picking their blog name. so incredibly many great / funny / creative ones out there!

Nancy, dearest. Your blog is perfectly titled. Like several others who have commented here, I always click on a blog because its title pulls me in like a fish on a line. I stop by here almost daily because it’s a place that brings me peace and calm. It’s meditative and soothing and just so you. Even when I don’t comment (though I always should) I’m here, and your blog’s name is what drew me in. “Don’t change a hair for me….” la de da, la de dum…..(singing) (poorly)
Playing catch up a bit, will have to go and find Gail’s posting. I think you have chosen well. Reflections, whether anyone reads them or not, keep you true to yourself. To thine ownself be true…. Too often is seems we adapt to what we think the reader wants to see. I keep reminding myself that I need to keep my voice. I appreciate comments, but if no one comments, it is ok. Soliloquy is perfect.
