Salty Rose

Chester, Nova Scotia

“O gather me the rose, the rose,
While yet in flower we find it,
For summer smiles, but summer goes,
And winter waits behind it.”
– William Ernest Henley

  1. *Gail — this photo was taken in the small village of Chester, Nova Scotia. It’s population explodes in the summer with the influx of those who summer there. Some of the real estate (and boats) would make you weep! Thx for the reminder — I’ll include this info below the photo.

  2. I’d like to think the NS tourist folks would see this, and use it in their brochures. It is perfect, Nancy.

  3. Please tell me this is a rose in a vase! I couldn’t bear to hear that it was growing so well close to the salt sea…

Lovely pic and thought as always.

  4. *Stuart — this rose is very much alive and well at the water’s edge. I have several shots taken from a distance that show the bush in its entirety. :)

Thanks, all of you, for your lovely compliments — Chester is where I’d have my dream home, if such a thing existed. :) It’s a 40 minute drive from where I live now. I’ll highlight some more photos of the area in future posts. It really is picture perfect.

  5. Beautiful shot of a beautiful spot Nancy. I’ll be looking forward to seeing more photos of Chester.

  6. This place sounds like one of the seaside areas that artists like to go to for inspiration. Lovely photo, can’t wait to see more.

  7. This photo is indeed enough to make me want to visit Chester. So peaceful looking. You have such an eye for photo composition

  8. This was a wonderful image to look at and think about this morning. I can just hear it too…the sound of the metal clinking on the masts and the water lapping on the boats.Smell, too: the tang of the sea and the fragrance of the rose.

  9. what a lovely and soothing blog…I wandered over from a Quiet Country House to find you and what a soothing place. Thank you!

  10. very nice photoshop effect Nancy. As always, I really enjoy the lovely poem you’ve chosen to accompany your lovely seaside rose.

  11. Nancy, Have you ever considered going professional? Your photos are so beautiful; I could look at this one all day. And such a perfect quote.

  12. *Rose — how kind you are. :) I used to have a small photography business when my girls were young, doing weddings and kids’ portraits, mostly. It was lovely enough, but the “forced” aspect of it removed much of the joy, so I now make pictures for the sheer enjoyment of it. That’s not to say I might not scout out some markets, mind you. Digital has made everything SO easy, compared. :) Thanks again.

  13. How heavenly, Nancy! I love the juxtaposition of the rose against the sea–two of my favorite things in the whole world!
