Frost on the Pumpkin

And on the Pumpkin King, it would seem! This giant carving that sits on Water Street in downtown Windsor is a representation of and a tribute to Howard Dill, the undisputed King of the Giant Pumpkin.

Dill’s Atlantic Giant Pumpkin is the patriarch of all giant pumpkins. From 1979 to 1982, consecutively, Dill grew four world champions. Those weights have long since been exceeded, but it is from Dill’s seeds that most of the gigantic gourds are grown, some of which now exceed 1500 lbs. That’s a lot of pumpkin!

In addition to his Great Pumpkin Patch, Dill’s farm also contains Long Pond where the first game of ice hockey is believed to have been played.
