  1. Strong stuff,

“Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.”

I can think of no stronger admonition to keep faith with those who gave so much to protect the freedoms we often hold so lightly today. I do always take this medicine with a dose of another poet, as well, though:

“If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe–
Such boasting as the Gentiles use
Or lesser breeds without the law–
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget – lest we forget!

For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard–
All valiant dust that builds on dust,
And guarding, calls not Thee to guard–
For frantic boast and foolish word,
Thy mercy on Thy people, Lord!”

  2. David! It’s wonderful to have your visit. I hope things are going well with you. Kipling was a genius, but then, we established that long ago, didn’t we? ;) Thanks for your comment — powerful stuff, indeed.
